“Yo, Sam! I’ve got the apprentice I’ve been telling you about!” Jack yelled from afar.

Sam straightened his back over the guts of the car he was repairing and stretched. “I’m coming over,” he called back and pulled out a rag he used to clean his hands. With one of the young mechanics gone, they needed to employ someone new. It hadn’t been the plan to take in an apprentice, but Jack was adamant about getting this job for some friend of his, who really needed to learn some kind of trade.

Sam threw the rag to the floor and walked over to the small office next to his work station. He pushed open the door and had to do a double take when he noticed two familiar faces. He nodded at Loki and approached Jack. “Where? Is he taking a piss?” asked Sam, gesturing at the restroom.

“No, here he is. Your new apprentice.” Jack grinned and pushed Loki a step forward.

Loki grinned and waved at Sam. This was a fucking disaster.

“You’re joking,” muttered Sam, tensing his shoulders. What the hell was Jack thinking? That he could just maneuver Sam into participating in this charade?

Loki frowned and faked surprise as he looked up at Jack. It was so blatant Sam could hardly believe this shit.

Jack spread his arms. “What? Why? He’s got two hands and a brain. Needs the money. What, you think he can’t do it ‘cause he’s gay?”

Sam exhaled and shook his head at Jack. The bastard knew damn well Loki being gay was not an issue here. “You piece of shit. Your friend? You know I already had my share of counseling you two. I need no more of that.”

Loki spread his arms. “But Sam, Jack has nothing to do with it. It’s just me.”

“He really wants this job, Sam. Wants to be useful and shit. I didn’t want you to have a bias,” Jack added with a fake-concerned face.

Sam kicked over the chair. “I can have no fucking bias if I wasn’t the one to assess him. It’s you who has a bias, because you fuck him!”

Loki brought his index finger to his lips. “Sam, keep it down a bit, okay?”

Red Jack groaned and looked away. Great. So now it was Sam who was fucking insensitive? Seriously?

“Jack, can’t he just get a job he’s qualified for? He never expressed any interest, and he’s been living here for a few months now.”

Loki pouted. “It’s not my place to ask...”

Sam could swear there was a silly smile at those words under Jack’s bushy beard. Loki was the last person who ever asked for permission to do shit.

“Just give him a shot,” Jack muttered and stroked Loki’s back. “You can kick him out if he’s useless.”

Sam exhaled and looked at Loki, who hardly kept a smile at bay, judging from his eyes. There was no use. Of course he would give Loki a trial. Otherwise Candy would add sugar to his lunch, like she did after he forgot their anniversary. He pinched the base of his nose and looked up at the weirdest couple he knew.
